Basics About Leather

Leather is made from animal skins that are specially treated and preserved. Animals such as cows, deer, sheep, ostrich, pigs and snakes are most popularly used to make leather. Each leather has a formal name.

For example, leather from a young cow is called calfskin, leather from a young goat is kidskin and leather from a young sheep is lambskin. Shearling is leather from a sheep that still has the wool attached.

Before these skins can be used to make items such as shoes, gloves, handbags, belts, jackets and furniture, they go through a tanning process to make them leather. During this tanning process, the animal skins are cleaned and preserved so they are soft, waterproof and attractive.

Several different tanning processes are available and a combination of them may be used to make leather that is supple and strong. Vegetable tanning uses tannin. Tannin comes from the wood, leaves, vegetable matter and bark of plants such as chestnut, hemlock, oak and mangrove. Animal hides are treated with tannin and stretched over frames for several weeks to create a flexible material often used for furniture and luggage. Leather that has undergone the vegetable tanning process can be oiled to make it more resistant to water.

Mineral tanning uses mineral salts to process hides and produces the lightest leather. This type of tanning employs agents such as chromium salt and aluminum. Hides soak in a saline bath or acid bath for a couple of day to create a more pliable, soft material than vegetable tanning. Mineral tanning also allows a spectrum of colors to be introduced to the leather. Leather that has undergone the mineral tanning process is ideal for handbags, gloves, jackets and garments.

An old-fashioned method of preserving animal skin is oil tanning, which uses fatty oils to replace moisture in dried skins. This process, combined with synthetic tanning agents such as hydrocarbons, creates porous chamois leather.

After any tanning process, skins are dried, reconditioned, stretched and finished to create usable leather. For example, patent leather is glazed and baked to shiny finish and often used to make shoes. Suede is brushed leather, which is used for boots, jackets and other garments. Buckskin is a suede-like material made from a special tanning process to make luxurious wallets and accessories. Slink, a soft material made of skins from unborn calves, is desirable for making gloves.

People have enjoyed using leather for many centuries and the finest gloves, jackets, shoes and furniture are still made from leather today.

We're not sure if Carolina actually played a legitimate NFL team this past Sunday. The Vikings are pathetic this year. Everyone on the team is to blame. The only thing we can hope for now is a decent pick in the draft.
We're actually at a loss for words to explain how the Vikings could improve. We don't think there's much room for improvement with this group of underachievers. The team suffered another blowout and this time it was at the hands of the Panthers.

So what went wrong?

1) Fred Smoot talked a good game prior to playing the Panthers and attempting to cover wide receiver Steve Smith. Prior to game time, Smoot provided some trash talk against Smith. Smoot should have stayed home.
Smoot couldn't cover the broad side of a barn on Sunday and Smith demolished the incompetent Smoot. Steve Smith put up over 200 yards receiving against Smoot and made him look like an amateur.
Smoot better refrain from trash talk in the future. I'm not even sure if he could cover a snail.

2) Duante Culpepper is injured. Culpepper suffered a knee injury early in the first half of Sunday's game. Culpepper will be out for the remainder of the year.
We're not sure that the QB position will actually suffer in his absence. Brad Johnson an NFL veteran will replace Culpepper.
Johnson won't be under pressure because he's not expected to perform at Culpepper's level (Which was terrible this year). Johnson also inherits a terrible record from a terrible team.

3) The rest of the team is inept. There isn't a bright spot on this team. Last week, Edinger kicked a 56 yard field goal. This week he was back to his regular form of missing chip shots.
The Offensive Line is atrocious. They seem unable to block and protect the Quarter Back. This has been a problem for a couple of seasons but things seem to be getting worse every game.

4) Mike Tice is the most to blame. He runs the team and seems as if he hasn't prepared for his weekly games. Tice seems to be overwhelmed by his opponents. Tice's team had a good week against the 1-6 Green bay Packers and then fell to the depths of inferiority this week.
It seems the Vikings get worse every week. Just when you think that they've hit rock bottom, they find a way to amaze us by doing even worse.

This year has been an awful year as a fan. The Vikings have put an inferior product on the field and have even found a way to embarrass themselves off the field.
Sunday's game was terrible and it looked like the Panthers weren't facing an NFL caliber team. We think that a high school team would have done better on Sunday.

Then only thing left for fans is to hope that the Vikings get a good draft pick and send Tice packing at the end of the season.

How to evaluate hiking boots and footwear for comfort, protection, and durability.

Choosing hiking boots and footwear is one of the most important decisions you as a hiker or camper will make. They'll either make your trip memorable or miserable. To find what's best for you, ask yourself "What type of hiking do I do?"

Day Hiking (Light-weight)- Do you usually go for short hikes for one to several hours during the week or weekend without a backpack? Then you'll want to consider these. They're lighter, flexible, and breathe better because they're usually made of fabric and split-grain leather. They're comfortable for day outings but you'll become fatigued and your feet will begin to bother you if you try to hike with a pack or for an extended trip because they aren't designed to support you like the hiking boots below.

Backpacking/Hiking (Mid-weight)- Stiffer mid-weight hiking boots provide more support and protection for shorter 2-3 day trips or even day hikes with or without a light to moderate load. If you hike for a few hours and want more support and/or up to three days on or off-trail on easy to moderate trails get a mid-weight leather backpacking boot.

Extended Backpacking (Mountaineering)- The best level of support, protection, and durability for heavier loads and longer trips, but they're also usually heavier. Supports heavy loads of approximately 40+ pounds (could vary with hiking boot). If you hike for more than three days on or off-trail with a moderate to heavy pack on demanding terrain get an extended (heavy weight) backpacking boot. If you need to attach crampons for glaciers check to make sure the boots are compatible before you buy. For cold-weather hiking it's critical to get waterproof insulated boots that breathe to keep you dry.

Full-grain leather and Nubuck suede take water repellant products well but keep in mind that they won't waterproof a hiking boot NOT designed to be waterproof in the first place. The repellant will help shed water but if you're walking through streams or deep puddles you're going to get wet.

Waterproofing

You may or may not need waterproof hiking boots. Consider the environment you usually hike in and how long your trips are. If you do a lot of short desert hiking trips you probably don't need waterproof boots. Actually in a dry environment they'll only make it harder for your feet to breathe (more numerous or heavy layers mean less breathability). Nylon mesh fabric breathes better than leather, but remember you're making tradeoffs for durability, support, and protection.
